[dropcap]R[/dropcap]ichard Bruce “Dick” Cheney was born on 30th January, 1941. He is an American politician and businessman. He was the 46th Vice President of the United States from 2001 to 2009, under President George W. Bush. He attended Yale, the University of Wyoming, from where he graduated in BA and MA in Political Science.

In 1978, Cheney was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives representing Wyoming’s from 1979 to 1989. He was re-elected five times. He was briefly serving as House Minority Whip in 1989. Cheney was also selected to be the Secretary of Defense during the Presidency of George H. W. Bush, from 1989 to 1993. In the year 2004, Cheney was also re-elected to his second term as Vice President, defeating Senator John Kerry’s running mate, Senator John Edwards.

His image had to suffer quite a lot due to a few events in 2006. On February 11, 2006, there was a hunting incident, that, Dick Cheney shot Harry Whittington, a 78-year-old Texas attorney, while participating in a quail hunt at Armstrong ranch in Kennedy County, Texas. On February 14, 2006, Whittington had a non-fatal heart attack and arterial fibrillation due to the lead that entered close to his heart. Cheney in an interview stated about the shooting on February 15. Both Cheney and Whittington accepted and being good friends, narrated that the incident was an accident after Cheney had apologized. Although he was stranded within the midst of scandal, he remained cool and made sure that such things did not play a huge impact on his standing. He knew that for his future success, it was important for him to manage this issue like any other or else things might get out of hand. He taught the world’s politicians how to deal with issues in the right manner and not to mess up with them.

On August 2011, Cheney published a book named “A Personal and Political Memoir” written with Liz Cheney. The book outlines Cheney’s recollections of the War on Terrorism, the 2001 War in Afghanistan that ran-up to 2003, Iraq war and other events as well. He is a member of the United Methodist Church and was the first Methodist vice president too.

Cheney, due to his intense smoking, underwent so much of physical illness. This led him finally to undergo a seven-hour heart transplant procedure at Inova Fairfax Hospital at the age of 71 which was donated by an anonymous donor.
